Smite the Rock

[Ex. 17:6] Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
The rock at Horeb is a particular rock, not just any rock. It is so interpreted by Josephus, in 1 Cor. 10:4; Paul reveals his knowledge of this legend.
The rock became a symbol of G-d’s presence and power among His people.
The L-rd is worshiped as ‘Israel’s rock’ in the ‘song of Moses.’ (Deut. 23:3-4, 13, 15, 18; Ps. 95:1.
The ‘rock’ becomes a frequently employed term to G-d’s faithfulness in providing for His people. (See Ps. 105:41-42; and Ps. 81:16; and 1 Cor. 10:3-4.)
Horeb – there is no consensus as to the meaning of ‘Horeb’ or where it is located.
