Vulnerability Becomes G-d’s Opportunity

[1 Kgs. 17:13] And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
A widow was the weakest, most vulnerable member of society in the Biblical world!
Zidon is the jurisdiction of that city that was inhabited by Gentiles whom the Jews esteemed unclean was a presage of the calling of the Gentiles, so Elijah was the first prophet of the Gentiles.
Elijah calls out to the widow to fetch him a drink of water and there was still water at Zarephath because it was on the Mediterranean coast, but food was another matter.
She graciously fetches a drink of water to Elijah although he is a foreigner and she is on the brink of despair (Matt. 10:42; Heb. 13:2).
By divine providence to support him, his faith was severely tested by learning from her that her supplies were exhausted and that she was preparing her last meal for herself and son.
The Spirit of G-d having prompted him to ask, and her to grant, some necessary help, she received a prophet's reward (Matthew 10:41, 42), and for the one meal afforded to him, G-d, by a miraculous increase of the little stock, afforded many to her.
Therefore though she was a Gentile, yet she owned the G-d of Israel as the true G-d.
Who had no fuel, but what she gathered sticks in the streets, and nothing to live upon herself, but a handful of meal and a little oil!
Elijah requires as a trial of her faith, and obedience, which he knew G-d would plentifully reward; and so this would be a great example to encourage others to the practice of the same graces.
The meal of the barrel and the cruse of oil shall not fail until the day that the L-rd (not Baal) send rain upon the earth.
In contrast to the scheming sexual rites of Canaanite religion, the word of G-d, when accepted in faith, is able to supply one’s needs even under the most adverse conditions.
And surely the increase of her faith to such a degree, as to enable her thus to deny herself and trust the promise, was as great a miracle in the kingdom of grace, as the increase of her oil in the kingdom of fate.
Happy are they who can thus against hope believe and obey in hope
See how the reward answered the service. She made one cake for the prophet and was repaid with many for herself and her son.
What is laid out in charity is set out to the best interest, and upon the best securities
Her vulnerability becomes G-d’s opportunity.
Your vulnerability will also become G-d’s opportunity to show you what He can do!
