[Ex. 32:14] And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.The bases of Yahweh’s repenting:
1. Intercession, as here and in Amos 7:1-6.
2. Repentance of the people (Jer. 18:3; John 3:9).
3. Yahweh’s compassionate nature (Jug. 2:18: Deut. 32:36; 2 Sam. 24:16).
Sequence of Events:
1. Moses returns from the mountain and gets the people’s attention.
2. Moses smashes the tablets of stone.
3. Moses tears down the golden calf and throws it into the fire, to melt.
4. Moses rebukes Aaron.
5. Moses calls the Israelites to declare allegiance, Levites to slay the others.
6. Moses girds the golden calf to powder, makes the Israelites to grind it.
7. Moses intercedes for the people.
8. G-d brings a plague on them.
