Holiness 4 times 6942 (apartness, holiness, sacredness, separateness = of G-d, places and things).
1Chron. 16:29 Give unto the L-RD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the L-RD in the beauty of holiness
2Chron. 20:21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the L-RD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the L-RD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
[Consulted - Never was army drawn out to the field of battle as Jehoshaphat’s was. He had soldiers ready prepared for war (chp. 17:18), but here is no notice taken of their military equipment, their swords or spears, their shields or bows. But Jehoshaphat took care,
1. That faith should be their armour. As they went forth, instead of calling them to handle their arms, and stand to them, to keep ranks, observe orders, and fight valiantly, he bade them believe in the L-rd G-d and give credit to His word in the mouth of His prophets, and assured them that they should prosper and be established. The heart that is fixed that thus trusteth in the L-rd, and is kept in perfect peace. In our spiritual conflicts, this is the victory; this is the prosperity, even our faith.
2. That praise and thanksgiving should be their front line, v. 21. Jehoshaphat called a council of war, and it was resolved to appoint singers to go out before the army, to charge in the front, who had nothing else to do but to praise G-d, to praise His holiness, which is His beauty, to praise Him as they did in the Temple, Praise the L-rd; for His mercy endureth for ever. The hidden beauty of the crucified life and taking up their cross daily and following Him.
Never was army so unaccountably destroyed as that of the enemy this G-d did when His people began to sing and to praise (v. 22), for He delights to furnish those with matter for praise that have hearts for it. The Levites led the van with their musical instruments; and singing the 136th Psalm, the people went on, not as an army marching against an enemy, but returning in joyful triumph after a victory.
We read of His being angry at the prayers of His people (Ps. 80:4), but never at their praises.]
Ps. 29:2 Give unto the L-RD the glory due unto his name; worship the L-RD in the beauty of holiness.
[The recognition of His glory, and of His dominion over us, He is pleased to interpret as a gift to Him:
Give - or, "ascribe" (Psalms 29:1)". Give unto the L-rd your own selves, in the first place, and then your services. Give unto the L-rd glory and strength; acknowledge His glory and strength, and give praise to Him as a G-d of infinite majesty and irresistible power; and whatever glory or strength He has by His providence entrusted you with offer it to Him, to be used for His honour, in His service. Give Him your crowns; let them be laid at His feet; give Him your scepters, your swords, your keys, put all into His hand, that you, in the use of them, may be to Him for a name and a praise.’
Due unto His name - G-d’s name is that whereby He has made himself known. His sufficiency in Himself, intimated in His name Jehovah — I am that I am.
See (Psalms 5:11, 8:1).
Worship the L-rd in the beauty of holiness, which denotes,
1. The object of our worship; the glorious majesty of G-d is called the beauty of holiness, we must have an eye to the beauty of His holiness; this the angels fasten upon in their praises, Rev. 4:8.
2. The Sanctuary then was the beauty of holiness, Ps. 48:1, 2; Jer. 17:12. The beauty of the Sanctuary was the exact agreement of the worship there performed with the divine appointment—the pattern in the mount.
3. Now, under the gospel, which purity is the beauty of are the places where G-d is to be worshipped. There is a beauty in holiness, and it is that which puts an acceptable beauty upon all the acts of worship.]
Ps. 96:9 O worship the L-RD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
[We must worship Him in the beauty of holiness, that is, their conformity to His rule. We must worship Him with holy hearts, sanctified by the grace of G-d, devoted to the glory of G-d, and purified daily from the pollutions of sin.
Fear . . . him - (Psalms 2:11). In every nation those that feared G-d and wrought righteousness were accepted of Him. The court of the Gentiles shall no longer be an outward court, but shall be laid in common with the court of Israel. All the earth is here summoned to fear before the L-rd, to worship Him according to His appointment. We must fear before him; all the acts of worship must be performed from a principle of the fear of G-d and with a holy awe and reverence.
The L-rd is great, and therefore greatly to be praised (v. 4) and to be feared, great and honourable to His attendants, great and terrible to His adversaries and, when the everlasting gospel is preached, it is this, Fear G-d, and give glory to Him, Rev. 14:6, 7. He is great in the manifestation of His glory both in the upper and lower world, among His angels in heaven and His saints on earth (v. 6): Splendor and majesty are before Him, in His immediate presence above, where the angels cover their faces, as unable to bear the dazzling luster of His glory. Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary, both that above and this below. In G-d there is every thing that is awful and yet every thing that is amiable. Let us therefore go forth in His strength, captivated with His beauty.]
