Lowly 6 times 6035 (poor, humble, afflicted, meek, lowly)
Ps. 138:6 Though the L-RD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.
[Proud - knows them, but disowns them and rejects them.]
57:15 For the High and Exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy says this: "I live in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and lowly of spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the oppressed.
[The favour G-d bears to His humble people yet has He respect unto the lowly, smiles upon them as well pleased with them, overlooks heaven and earth to cast a gracious look upon them and He will put honour upon them.]
Isa. 2:11 Human pride will be humbled, and the loftiness of men will be brought low; the L-rd alone will be exalted on that day.
[Lofty looks - literally, "eyes of pride" (Psalms 18:27)
Humbled - calamities.
G-d will so vindicate His honor "in that day" of judgments, that none else "shall be exalted" (Zechariah 14:9).]
66:2 My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being.
This the L-rd’s
declaration. I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and who trembles at My word.
Prov. 3:34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
[Those who exalt themselves shall certainly be abased: Surely He scorns the scorners. Those who scorn to submit to the discipline of religion, scorn to take G-d’s yoke upon them, scorn to be beholden to His grace, who scoff at G-dliness and G-dly people, and take a pleasure in bantering and exposing them, G-d will scorn them, and lay them open to scorn before all the world. He despises their powerless malice, sits in heaven and laughs at them, Ps. 2:4. He retaliates upon them; he resists the proud.
Those who humble themselves shall be exalted, for He gives grace to the lowly; He works that in them which puts honour upon them and for which they are accepted of G-d and approved of men. Those who patiently bear contempt from scornful men shall have respect from G-d and all good men, and then they have no reason to envy the scorners or to choose their ways.
The end of sinners will be everlasting shame, the end of saints’ endless honour, v. 35. Saints are wise men, and act wisely for themselves; for though their religion now wraps them up in obscurity, and lays them open to reproach, yet they are sure to inherit glory at last, the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. They shall have it, and have it by inheritance, the sweetest and surest term. G-d gives them grace (v. 34), and therefore they shall inherit glory, for grace is glory, 2 Co. 3:18. It is glory begun, the earnest of it, Ps. 84:11.
Ps. 18:26 with the pure You prove Yourself pure, but with the crooked You prove Yourself shrewd.
Pro 11:2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
[Self-conceit is un-teachable; the humble grow wise. Pride is a sin which men have reason to be themselves ashamed of; it is a shame to a man who springs out of the earth, who lives upon alms, depends upon G-d, and has forfeited all he has, to be proud.
How he that humbles himself is here exalted, and a high character is given him. As with the proud there is folly, and will be shame, so with the lowly there is wisdom, and will be honour, for a man’s wisdom gains him respect and makes his face to shine before men; or, if any be so base as to trample upon the humble, G-d will give them grace which will be their glory.]
Prov. 16:19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
[Divide the spoil - that is, conquer
1. Those that divide the spoil are commonly proud; they value themselves and despise others, and their mind rises with their condition; those therefore that are rich in this world have need to be charged that they be not high-minded, 1 Tim. 6:17. Those that are proud and will put forth themselves, that thrust, and shove, and scramble, for preferment, are the men that commonly divide the spoil and share it among them; they have the world at will and the ball at their foot.
2. It is upon all accounts better to take our lot with those whose condition is low, and their minds brought to it, than to covet and aim to make a figure and a bustle in the world. Humility, though it should expose us to contempt in the world, yet while it recommends us to the favour of G-d, qualifies us for His gracious visits, prepares us for His glory, secures us from many temptations, and preserves the quiet and repose of our own souls, is much better than that high-spiritedness which, though it carry away the honour and wealth of the world, makes G-d a man’s enemy and the devil his master.]
Zec. 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
[Daughter of Zion - The theocratic people is called to "rejoice" at the coming of her King (Psalms 2:11).
Unto thee - He comes not for His own gain or pleasure, as earthly kings come, but for the sake of His Believers: especially for the Jews' sake, at His second coming (Romans 11:26). He is just - righteous: an attribute constantly given to Messiah (Isaiah 45:21, 53:11, Jeremiah 23:5, 6) in connection with salvation. He does not merely pardon by conniving at sin, but He justifies by becoming the L-rd our righteousness fulfiller, so that not merely mercy, but justice, requires the justification of the sinner who by faith becomes one with Messiah. G-d's justice is not set aside by the sinner's salvation, but is magnified and made honorable by it (Isaiah 42:1, 21). His future reign "in righteousness," also, is especially referred to (Isaiah 32:1).
Having salvation - The Hebrew is reflexive in sense, "showing Himself a Saviour; . . . having salvation in Himself" for us. Endowed with a salvation which He bestows as a king, His "having salvation" for others manifested that He had in Himself that righteousness which was indispensable for the justification of the unrighteous (1 Corinthians 1:30, 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:1). Still, Messiah shall come to take "just" vengeance on His foes, previous to His reign of peace (Matthew 4:1, 2).
Lowly - mild, gentle: corresponding to His "riding on an ass" (not a despised animal, as with us; nor a badge of humiliation, for princes in the East rode on asses, as well as low persons, Judges 5:10), that is, coming as "Prince of peace" (Zechariah 9:10, Isaiah 9:6); the "horse," on the contrary is the emblem of war, and shall therefore be "cut off." Perhaps the Hebrew includes both the "lowliness" of His outward state (which applies to His first coming) and His "meekness of disposition," as Matthew 21:5 quotes it (compare Matthew 11:29), which applies to both His comings. Both adapt Him for loving sympathy with us men; and at the same time are the ground of His coming manifested exaltation (John 5:27, Philippians 2:7-9).
Colt - untamed, "whereon yet never man sat" (Luke 19:30), the symbol of a triumphant conqueror and judge (Judges 5:10, 10:4, 12:14).
Foal of an ass - literally, "asses": in Hebrew idiom, the indefinite plural for singular (so Genesis 8:4, "mountains of Ararat," for one of the mountains). The dam accompanied the colt (Matthew 21:2). The entry of Y’Shua into Jerusalem at His first coming is a pledge of the full accomplishment of this prophecy at His second coming. It shall be "the day of the L-rd" (Psalms 118:24), as that first Palm Sunday was. The Jews shall then universally (Psalms 118:26) say, what some of them said then, "Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the L-rd" (compare Matthew 21:9, with Matthew 23:39); also "Hosanna," or "Save now, I beseech thee." "Palms," the emblem of triumph, shall then also be in the hands of His people (compare John 12:13, with Revelation 7:9, 10). Then also, as on His former entry, shall be the Feast of Tabernacles (at which they used to draw water from Siloam, quoting Isaiah 12:3). Compare Psalms 118:15, with Zechariah 14:16.]
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
[Take my yoke upon you - Believe in Me: receive Me as your prophet, priest, and king.
For I am meek and lowly in heart - Meek toward all men, lowly toward G-d.Ye shall find rest - Whoever therefore does not find rest of soul, is not meek and lowly. The fault is not in the yoke of Y’Shua: but in thee, who hast not taken it upon thee. Nor is it possible for any one to be discontented, but through want of meekness or lowliness.]
