Y’Shua’s teaching was more in harmony with the Pharisaic than any other group in his day. Some scholars believe he belonged to one of the groups. The Hebrew word for Pharisee means separatist and they took up the principle of holiness as a priestly code (1 Pet. 1:16).
There are 7 types of Pharisees in the ancient Talmud (Old Covenant):
1. Shoulder Pharisee - who carried heavy burdens on their shoulders. Y'Shua said “Come to me all you who heavy laden”.
2. Wait a moment Pharisee - always wanted to be excused to do a different good deed.
3. Bruised/blind Pharisee - that walked with his eyes down to avoid looking at lust, so he kept running into walls. Y’Shua talked about the blind leading the blind (Matt. 23:16, Luke 6:39).
4. Pestle Pharisee - who walk with his head bowed down, rather than observe alluring temptations.
5. Calculating Pharisee - who was always saying, "Tell me what good deed I might do to offset a bad deed." Always counting his good deeds to see if they offset his failures.
6. G-d-fearing Pharisee - like Job, who is truly righteous in his actions.
7. G-d-loving Pharisee - like Abraham
In Matt. 23:3, notice that Y’Shua told his students (disciples) to do what the Pharisee says because they sat in Moses seat, but don’t do what they do. Besides no one was as critical towards the Pharisees as the Pharisees, always checking themselves.
It was not the Pharisee who plotted against Y’Shua but instead the temple aristocracy of the Sadducees who Y’Shua frequently denounced. The Sadducees ceased to exist about 70 AD with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The Sadducees were descendants of the priestly house of Zadok. They believed that the temple worship was the main purpose of the law, while the Pharisees, like Y’Shua stressed the individual fulfillment as the reason for man’s existence. The Sanhedrin ran the temple and profited from it.
What type of a Pharisee are you? How and whom do you serve?
