Contemporary Recipe:
1 ½ c. butter 3 c. sugar 6 eggs 3 ½ c. flour
2 tsp. B. Powder 1 c. water 1 Tbs. honey 2 c. chopped almonds
1 tsp. cloves cinnamon ground nutmeg
pinch of salt 2 c. raisins 2 c. chopped dried figs
Cream together butter and sugar.
Beat in eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Shift together flour, baking power, salt and spices. Alternately add flour and water to butter mixture.
Add honey, figs, raisins and almonds. Mix well.
Turn into two well-greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pans.
Bake at 350F about 60 minutes. Let cakes cool for 30 minutes in pans before turning them out onto a rack.
Makes 2 loaves.
